AQUATICS PROGRAMS

Scenic Hills Recreation Center (SHRC) offers an assortment of athletics for both youth and adults. Sport activities include swimming, volley ball, and tennis camp throughout the summer. Swimming is a low-impact cardiovascular exercise for the whole body. Our aquatic program inspires youth to develop self-confidence, life and physical skills, and social benefits; while introducing them to water safety, hazards and risks associated with a natural environment.

Summer Feeding Program

SHRC merges its various programs with SFSP’s free meal service and combines learning components and recreational activities for the children; making us a “One of a Kind” in the nonprofit sector across the mid-south. We feed meals twice a day; SHRC helps to ensure that low income children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is not in session. Therefore, we are committed to seeing that no child goes hungry during the summer.

Lifeguard Training

Lifeguarding is a fun summer job, but it’s also a highly important job! We think it gives youth an opportunity to become a part of a larger cause when other people’s safety depends on them. This profession teaches useful lifelong skills. Youth are trained in first aid, CPR, and AED. We take pleasure in knowing they are acquiring knowledge that will follow them for the rest of their lives. And so, they will always know how to react when there is an emergency. After completing the lifeguard training course, guards receive a 2 year certification from the American Red Cross and are able to further their skills as they work hands on at our facility for the summer.  We get excited to see them come in because we view them as heroes; and WE KNOW THEY ARE THE HEROES OF SHRC.

Compared to other sports, tennis is one of the best sports for high-intensity interval training for a total-body workout. In this geographic area, it is referred to as an intramural sport which, simply means that kids within the mid-south may never have the opportunity to engage in the sport. Our tennis camp will encourage our youth to develop self-confidence, life and physical skills, and social benefits; while introducing them to water safety, hazards and risks associated with a natural environment. It is our hope that each child will be enlightened, enriched and well prepared for their future endeavors. It’s our way of providing a positive distraction for at-risk youth. We have fun in the sun.

Free Swim Classes

SHRC “Gives Back” to the Mid-South through our free “Swim Academy”. This swim academy was founded by our CEO in 2019 to instructionally educate and train twenty (20) children, ages 4 to 14 years old, about water safety. Facilitated by American Red Cross Swim Instructors and Lifeguards, students of the academy attend weekly swim classes and each receives a minimum of 7 hours total in the water learning the necessary life-skill.

Swim Team

In past decades, SHRC Swim Team has participated in competitive swim tournaments and meets across the mid-south. Therefore, we are happy to announce the reopening of our swim team. Candidates will be a mixture of kids selected from the children enrolled in our aquatic program.

This opportunity will allow the kids to get to know one another through teamwork make lifelong friendships and develop a skillset that could very well lead to future employment as certified lifeguards at our facility. It is our hope that each child will be enlightened, enriched and well prepared for their future endeavors. It’s our way of providing a positive distraction for at-risk youth. It's just one of the many ways we have fun in the sun.
